Roger Telecom outage severely hampers life in parts of Canada yesterday
Rogers Telecom, one of Canada's leading communication providers, suffered a severe failure yesterday. From what I understand, the affected areas were spread all across the country, though it was the Toronto area that suffered the brunt of it.
Credit card payments could not go through, border crossings did not operate normally, calls to emergency services could not go through. It was that bad.
Now thus far I was not able to find any reports as to what the cause was. My first guess would be, excess corporate uniformity within Rogers and some infrastructural issue that spread like wildfire, causing cascading failures. In Canada as of late, with the society going more and more socialist, large corporations have been becoming more and more like state bureaucracies - and this has a feel or a large bureaucracy experiencing a failure. These are just my guesses at this point - hopefully, before long we will get more details on the situation.
At this point, after a 19 hour long outage, things are coming back to normal. Hopefully, people in Canada get their communications back up soon. Meanwhile, let us remember not to take what we have fro granted and maintain a proper level of emergency preparedness.
